TSIMSHIAN TERRITORY/PRINCE RUPERT, B.C. — Ksi Lisims LNG and the Metlakatla First Nation have signed a benefits agreement, representing an important moment for the Ksi Lisims LNG project, a proposed LNG facility and marine terminal at Wil Milit on Pearse Island being co-developed by the Nisga'a Nation, Western LNG and Rockies LNG.
The Benefits Agreement includes support for climate initiatives and sets out business opportunities intended to utilize Metlakatla’s existing expertise and strengthen capacity to deliver long term benefits to the community and support economic independence.
“This agreement reflects the importance of working together to create opportunities that benefit both our members and the broader Northwest region,” said Chief Councillor Robert Nelson. “It establishes a foundation for participation, collaboration, and shared success while recognizing the important role Indigenous leadership plays in shaping the future of our region. We look forward to continuing to work with our neighbouring Nations and project partners to support economic participation, strengthen capacity, and create lasting opportunities for our businesses, workforce, and communities.”
“Building and maintaining strong relationships with participating First Nations is fundamental to how we approach these projects,” said Davis Thames, Founder, CEO, and President of Western LNG. “Through collaboration and partnership, we are committed to developing Ksi Lisims LNG in a way that reflects shared values and delivers tangible benefits for Metlakatla First Nation members.”
"The Benefits Agreement between Metlakatla and Ksi Lisims LNG is an important step for the project and for the region,” said Eva Clayton, President of the Nisga’a Nation. “We have always envisioned the Ksi Lisims LNG project as economically important for the entirety of Northwest B.C., and we are pleased to see this vision materializing.”
Metlakatla First Nation and Prince Rupert Gas Transmission Ltd. have also amended their existing Project Agreement to reflect developments since the Agreement was first signed in 2015.
Ksi Lisims LNG, meaning “from the Nass River” in the Nisga’a language, is a proposed net-zero liquefied natural gas project in British Columbia, Canada. It will be located on Nisga’a Nation-owned land on the northern tip of Pearse Island. Powered by renewable hydroelectricity, Ksi Lisims LNG is designed to be one of the lowest emission intensity LNG facilities in the world with a pathway to net-zero. The facility will produce 12 million tonnes per annum of LNG from two floating LNG production and storage facilities.
The Prince Rupert Gas Transmission Project is a 750km natural gas pipeline that will safely and responsibly deliver natural gas from northeastern British Columbia to the proposed Ksi Lisims LNG facility on Nisga’a Nation territory. PRGT was acquired from TC Energy during 2024 by NW Infrastructure Limited Partnership, co-owned equally by Western LNG and the Nisga'a Nation. PRGT represents a new model for Indigenous-led infrastructure—prioritizing environmental responsibility, economic reconciliation, and local partnership.
